what do i love more than gift guides? lookbooks! well, that and the already-styled outfits that can be found on most of my favorite window-shopping sites. i’m not one to plan out an outfit completely but i do like having a bank of inspiration at my disposal so my mornings don’t involve a pile of reject outfits left on the bed… not that i’ve ever done before…
tangent: now that i’m working again, getting dressed in the mornings has been kind of fun – it reminds me of when i started my first job here in sf, and i was really obsessed with gossip girl and wore skirts, tights, heels and blazers every day… seems like so long ago! i don’t know what it is, but strolling down maiden lane (where my office is located) in shoes that only sort of hurt my feet makes me feel like… me again. it’s nice.
anyway, here are some looks i’m loving these days… nothing too trendy, mostly really good basics with some stripes for good measure… keep in mind necklines/hemlines can be adjusted for workplace appropriateness 🙂
where do you get outfit inspiration? celebrities? blogs? window shopping? any favorite sites? do tell 🙂

a few reasons to love this time of year:
-dogs wearing antlers 🙂
-pumpkin frozen yogurt, especially with crushed graham crackers on top..
-trips back home, puppy snuggles and parties
-and… gift guides!
my j.crew catalog came in the mail today and as expected, it’s pure eye candy. i know it’s planned this way but seeing everything styled and photographed just so makes me want it all. (also, i had no idea i needed a gift for my personal assistant, manicurist and aunt gertrude… thanks, j.crew.)
anyway, in the spirit of artfully arranged gift suggestions, here are some of my own! i’m keeping it under $50, just for fun (and practicality).
1. j.crew striped thermal henley, $42
2. tocca beauty eau de parfum viaggio, $45
3. kate spade new york iphone case, $40
4. marc by marc jacobs brass doe earrings, $48
5. ban.do chiffon shoe clips, $25
6. anthropologie passport case, $28
7. madewell snow-dot shorts, $48
8. home made by yvette van boven, $25.50
9. mor cosmetics basil & grape gift set, $22
hope you like!

i have news! happy, newly employed news. come the monday after thanksgiving, i’ll be starting as a junior copywriter at a home decor/gift store here in san francisco. let’s just say there was a lot of jumping around involved after i received the offer and i may have let out a pretty sizable squeak… but honestly, after too many months of marinating in pajamas peppered by too few freelance gigs, it’s all rose-colored contacts and giggles over here.
then i looked in my closet, and a minor freak-out ensued.
you see, i’ve never actually had to “dress” for a job. four years (give or take) of working for various fashion and retail-focused start-ups has left me with lots of wiggle room, wardrobe-wise… which is totally fine until you end up with a job where styles err on the side of corporate.
in a nutshell, my closet is a place where flirty dresses, v-neck tees and boyfriend jeans hang out (heh) with enough little, medium and big brown bags to make my credit cards shudder in their worn leather sleeves. my trusty theory suit cowers in a corner, outnumbered by an army of casual attire. basically, i’m starting from scratch here. i went to zara yesterday, tried on as much of the store as i could fit into one of their teensy dressing rooms… and walked out with a skirt. one skirt.
question: what are your work outfit essentials? do you like to have fun with work outfits? any help/inspiration is much appreciated!

…or something like that.
i wouldn’t exactly call myself a handbag person – sure, the occasional carryall might capture my attention for a moment but my gaze is usually deflected to the nearest pair of shoes or sparkly object. what can i say. then i saw this bag at zara, and it seemed to stick in my mind for longer than usual. something about the randomly placed neon pink elastic called out to me, which is completely and admittedly weird but makes enough sense in my head. it arrived today (free shipping, so dangerous!) and the quality is surprisingly good for a $26 clutch. it’s soft, slightly slouchy and can be carried with or without the adjustable strap, and the pop of pink provides a satisfying contrast. in other words, i’m impressed.
and now… i really need to clean off my nightstand.

socks – at least for me – tend to be a sartorial afterthought, an accessory borne of necessity, a layer between my feet and my flats – and that’s it. yeah, the socks i wear with my frye boots are the same kind i begrudgingly stuff into my nikes. weird? who knows.
um.. hello polka dots and stripes! turns out, when socks look like this, the stuff i said before becomes kind of irrelevant. i found these at h&m and quickly scooped them up, conveniently ignoring the fact that i have no clue what to wear them with, beyond pajamas..

i’m going shoe shopping, and you’re coming with me. ready.. set.. let’s go!
first stop: american eagle. i know, i know. these shoes are far too cute for a retailer whose customer base is primarily teenagers and college students! i don’t know about you, but i spent those years in flip flops and skating boots, not runway-inspired ankle booties.
or these swedish hasbeens-inspired clogs, with skinny jeans and a casual jacket…
..or these cuffed and cozy booties, which would be perfect paired with plaid tops and grey jeans, don’t you think?
can you believe they’re each under $70 (whee!) and seem to be void of incriminating logos? i suppose if you got close enough to a pair you might find one… but that would be weird.
so… should i spring for these cheapy chic booties, or are they best left to the teenage set? i’d love to hear your thoughts!

dreaming of chilly weather, if only to have a reason for indulging in these fall and winter-friendly delights…
an oversized cashmere sweater that’s cute with leggings, boots, or last night’s pajamas…
cable knit socks, because you’ve been wearing sport socks under your boots and you’ve been told it’s weird.
mini (and deliverable!) black and white cookies for snacking, so you don’t have to steal them from the dessert table at your cousin’s wedding.
a childlike critter hat, because at $9.95 you can afford an “indoor” hat (if you’re not sure about wearing it out)!
a mug with a wise friend inside, so you don’t have to sip alone.
moccasins, because they were cool when you were a kid and they’ve made a comeback.
a sleeping fox pillow, for a bit of wilderness indoors.
and a striped throw, because your roomie/boyfriend wouldn’t let you get the striped sheets. humph.
anyway… what’s your favorite creature comfort this time of year? 🙂
