cookie decorating for lazy bakers

December 11, 2011 § 1 Comment

i love the idea of meticulously decorated cookies, but the process makes me nervous.

here’s what i do.

step 1: bake cookies. i used target’s store brand sugar cookie mix – super easy and just as good, if not better than scratch. there is a time and a place for store-bought mixes. this is one of them!

strawberry coconut cookie swirls

November 22, 2011 § 3 Comments

if i were a cookie, i’d want to be one of these.

i love that they’re reminiscent of those giant swirly lollipops at carnivals and old-fashioned candy stores. i found the recipe on sprinkle bakes but added my own twist, in the form of shredded coconut (that i further shredded in the food processor). the result is a delightfully sweet, buttery cookie that has just a hint of strawberry and coconut flavoring without tasting artificial.

best of all, they’re slice and bake! you don’t have to roll them in the sprinkles, but they actually keep the edges from darkening too much. see? totally necessary.

matcha green tea donut holes

October 24, 2011 § 6 Comments

since it’s monday, i thought it would be fun to talk about donuts. and really, when is it not fun to talk about donuts? or doughnuts. or do-nots, as i like to call them when i’m walking by the 24-hour donut shop on my way back from the market (this happens a lot).

confession: i’m really not the biggest donut fan. i think i have one once a year, maybe. you’d think the fact that the majority of the fried and frosted delights are coated in some sort of sprinkle would ensure at the very least, top three placement in my hierarchy of favorite sweet things, but alas… their forbidden nature succeeds in keeping me away.

until now.

i love madeleines – those delicate seashell-shaped, almond-kissed sponge cookies that are irresistible whether they’re homemade or sitting pretty next to the bananas at starbucks… you know the kind. the name itself is just so dainty and chic too – something i’d love to give to a small, prissy little canine, or perhaps a great dane because that would be silly and unexpected.

i baked up a batch using this recipe* and burned approximately two thirds of them, and felt the seven non-blackened ones deserved special treatment. i present you with…

manicured madeleines. what did you expect?

nothing is safe from the sprinkles in this kitchen.

i used one of those teeny gelato spoons to spread a very thin layer of honey on the cooled cookies, and then pressed the tips into a shallow bowl of sprinkles.

and… there you have it! pretty little cookies that will dot your tongue with artificial rainbows of sugary goodness. enjoy with a cold glass of milk and a bendy straw.

*modifications: i omitted the lemon zest and substituted almond extract for the vanilla.

an apple a day

..keeps the doctor away, unless it’s chopped and baked into an apple and cinnamon-studded muffin. bad lisanne. very good recipe.

these apple cinnamon crumble muffins may not be health food, but they’re great for the unexpectedly sunny fall mornings we’ve been having around here. plus, i used whole wheat flour and almond milk, so how bad can they be? assuming there are any left, i’ll be sending them home with tomorrow night’s dinner guests… a preventative measure, if you will. i simply cannot be trusted around anything with a cinnamon sugar crumb topping.

now if you’ll excuse me, i need to take care of this guy:

meet bruce. according to his papers he’s a jumbo dog from china, but i’m willing to bet one of his parents was a bernese.

the boyfriend and i were at target returning a few things, and this floofy fellow caught my eye. basically living in an apartment that doesn’t allow dogs is slowly turning me into a sad and grouchy person, so i couldn’t help myself. we made a deal. boyfriend said if the dog was still there when we were done, i could have him, so naturally i knelt down, told him to “stay,” and what do you know? he was there when we came back.

in addition to “stay,” he also knows “quiet” and doesn’t shed at all! but the shoes… oh, those are going to be a problem.

better make that sad, grouchy and a little bit crazy.

anyway… muffins! go make them. they’ve been known to undo all the crazy.

anatomy of a sandwich

September 18, 2011 § Leave a comment

i’m not really a sandwich person. i like them, but i’ll rarely order one when i’m out (unless it’s from here or, don’t laugh, here) because i’m so overwhelmed by the 8,963 options and add-ons that i all too often end up with a turkey sandwich, no mayo, sprouts, maybe avocado if i’m feeling adventurous. oh, and pickles too. aren’t i just a party and a half?

today, as i was dragging a 10-pound watermelon home from the market down the street (seriously the best arm workout, and only $1.72!), i was hit with a craving for a simple yet awesome sandwich. simple meaning five ingredients tops, awesome meaning… awesome. the star ingredient? a jar of fig jam i picked up the day before. i have big plans for this jam… i just don’t know what they are yet.

the cast of characters:

fig jam, laughing cow cheese, crusty wheat roll from here, sea salt, baby arugula. and my cutting board, which has seen better days.

the roll is so fresh that it has a bellybutton. old bread = no bellybutton. i don’t really know what this means, but it’s cute.

see that flour? it’s since relocated to the buttons on my camera. whoops.

the finished product. well, almost finished. clearly i was hungry. dragging watermelon babies up hills and strategically arranging arugula leaves will do that to you. the olive guy on my plate understands.

what’s your favorite sandwich? i’d love to hear! 🙂

new camera (squeee!)

perhaps a better title for this post would be “where i obsessively take pictures of food and try not to get sauce on my lens.”

“try” being the operative word here. so far, so good.

here are a couple of my first snaps. i’m still trying to learn all of the settings but it’s mostly been trial and error so far. hope you like!

salt cod fritter at bar bocce in sausalito

marble potato, smoked bacon and fontina pizza, also at bar bocce

asparagus gruyere tart, burnt end not pictured. recipe here.

fresh black mission figs, destined for a salad with prosciutto and chopped pistachios. most of them made it 🙂

now i just need to find a stylish camera bag. please tell me one exists!
